Day traders and other investors everywhere are being misled by the very organization that we are trusting to lead us out of the current economic predicament that we as a country, even a world, have found ourselves in.

And those who want to position themselves to take advantage of the resulting market turmoil will learn day trading strategies of success.

You’ve no doubt noticed the rising unemployment rate over the past year. In recent months, the unemployment rate has crested 10%, and most recently, dipped back down below 10%, to 9.7%.

However, the unemployment rate that is released by the Government is not the “true” economic unemployment rate.

In fact, it’s downright misleading. And it is meant to be.
Consider this – in the most recent unemployment data release, the so-called economic “experts” predicted a job GAIN of 10,000 jobs. But instead, we actually lost another 20,000 jobs.

And despite the job loss, the unemployment rate actually DROPPED from 10% to 9.7%.

So ask yourself – how is it possible that the unemployment rate would DROP when we had a net LOSS of 20,000 jobs?

How could we lose jobs, and also reduce our unemployment rate by 0.3%?

The answer is very simple – the “unemployment rate” released by the government isn’t the true “unemployment rate”.

The unemployment rate that you are most likely familiar with doesn’t include all categories of the unemployed.

And the figures have also been “seasonally adjusted”, which artificially skews the data.

If you visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics website and actually research the economic data yourself, you’ll discover that, while the “seasonally adjusted” unemployment rate is 9.7%, the “not seasonally adjusted rate” is actually 10.6%, as compared to the “not seasonally adjusted rate” in December 2009 of 9.7%.

So did the unemployment rate really drop 0.3%? Or has the data been manipulated to paint a better picture than reality?

But the shenanigans don’t end there. In fact, the “seasonal adjusting” factor is just the beginning!

The unemployment data released by the government doesn’t actually include ALL unemployment – they conveniently leave out several key categories of American workers.

For example, the data fails to include a group called “marginally attached to the labor force”, and a subset of this group called “discourage workers”.

People who fit into this category would include those who have searched for a job, who want a job, but who are not “actively seeking a job”. People who have become so discouraged that they have (at least temporarily) given up.

The government would have you believe that these groups should not be included in the unemployment data, because they aren’t actively looking for work.

But this group is still in many cases receiving unemployment compensation, and they are still creating a drag on the economy.

Just because you aren’t actively looking for a job does NOT mean that you are no longer “unemployed”

Also, the government’s interpretation of unemployment doesn’t include those workers who are “economically unemployed”, or the “underemployed” – people who WANT and NEED full-time work, but have had to settle for part-time work because there is nothing else available.

These people cannot live on their current incomes. But because they do in fact have a “job”, they are not included in the “official” unemployment rate.

So what does the “true” unemployment rate look like, once you eliminate the seasonal adjustments, and you consider ALL categories of unemployed and underemployed workers?

How does 18.0% sound to you?

That’s right, the non-seasonally adjusted, “true” unemployment rate, including ALL categories of the un- or under-employed, is a whopping 18.0%. And it increased by 0.9% from December 2009!

That’s a far cry from the 9.7% released by the government. The data released earlier this month would have you believe that the economy must be improving.

But if you look at the real data, how could you possibly conclude that?

So the question then becomes, WHY does the government calculate and release the data in this format? Are they purposely misleading the U.S. citizens and investors?

Hopefully it’s not something that sinister. But it could be.

The general public will at some point wise up to the unemployment shenanigans, and will realize that despite the falling unemployment rate, the economy really IS NOT improving.

And when that realization hits, the traditional, buy-and-hold investors will panic, start selling off stock, and we could be facing another market collapse.

For a traditional long-term investor, the true unemployment rate should make them shiver in their boots, should keep them awake at night.

However, many day traders are absolutely GIDDY about the unemployment rate data. Not because they are bad people that enjoy watching others suffer.

But because a day trader recognizes that wildly fluctuating economic data and also misleading data that will eventually become public knowledge will create the V word (which is universally LOVED by day traders)

VOLATILITY

Volatility, to the average, every day investor is a very, very bad thing, and creates massive risk, and potentially leads to massive losses.

Traditional, buy-and-hold investors like nice smooth, slow, gradual (upward) movement.

Volatility to a traditional investor can be very straining mentally, and often leads to the disgusting phenomenon among long-term investors of “buy high, sell low” (which is, of course, very opposite of what the goal is).

However, a day trader LOVES volatility, because they recognize what it represents.

In fact, a day trader would spell Volatility like this:

O-P-P-O-R-T-U-N-I-T-Y

A seasoned day trader will recognize the huge profit potential, the massive opportunity that wildly fluctuating (i.e. volatile) markets represent…IF they know what they are doing. If they learn day trading strategies for success.

Of course, an inexperienced day trader will get eaten alive by volatility – the market will take them down faster than they can blink.

But those who learn day trading, and then find effective strategies for dealing with volatility, and remain disciplined, will discover that the wildly fluctuating markets caused by economic turmoil, such as rapidly increasing unemployment (about which we are being misled) will create day trading profit opportunities that a traditional investor can only dream about.

But you MUST learn day trading strategies that are effective in periods of high market volatility. And you must learn to think critically for yourself, and don’t just take news stories and announcements at face value.

Even if they are being released by the United States Government.

Raise your hand if you know who George Soros is.

You all should. And if you don’t, you really need to get in touch with the Investment World.

George Soros is arguably the most famous hedge fund manager in history, and a billionaire investor.

And in a recent interview, he had some interesting things to say about investing in Gold.
Gold has long been considered a “hedge” (or a way to protect yourself) from inflation, economic troubles, faulty plumbing, getting a bad hair cut…just about EVERYTHING.

Is there the slightest hint of economic trouble?  Did job losses go up by 0.0001%?  QUICK, EVERYONE RUN TO GOLD!

So it should be no surprise that Gold has been pushing record highs seemingly daily.

Gold has become an outright PANIC hedge.

The economic turbulence that we’ve all been “enjoying” has pushed gold prices to the stratosphere.

Because of this, in a recent interview, Mr. Soros has predicted that gold has formed what he calls the ultimate asset bubble.

“When interest rates are low we have conditions for asset bubbles to develop, and they are developing at the moment.  The ultimate asset bubble is gold.”

So what does all this mean to you, the Trader?

Well, for starters, I’d think long and hard before you made a decision to go “long” in gold.

But should you go short right now?  That in itself is a risky proposition. Just because gold has formed a “bubble”, that doesn’t mean that it won’t continue to increase, especially in the short-term. It’s entirely possible that Gold prices could push up another 20%, 30%, even more before the “bubble” bursts.

And if people really start shorting gold futures, and gold-related stocks, and the price continues to rise, this will lead to a “short squeeze”, and could force prices even higher.

So what is my advice right now? Just stay all the way away from gold, but keep your eye on it. Because once gold prices start to drop, they could plummet in a way that makes home values look like a walk in the park.

Think dot.com – type meltdowns.

That being said, gold prices coming down might not be entirely a bad thing, for two reasons.

First, as we mentioned earlier, gold is a hedge against economic issues (and everything else…like your dog getting run over).

So falling gold prices might coincide with economic recovery, or at least with increasing investor confidence in the economic outlook going forward.

Also, when a “bubble” bursts, there is great opportunities for gains for those who are ready to take advantage of them.

Take real estate for example. Right now, people are buying real estate at prices that, in many cases, haven’t been seen in 10, 15, even 20 years. These are incredible investment opportunities right now for those who are still liquid, because real estate values have become so depressed, many people believe, myself included, that they have fallen farther than seems reasonable in many places, and right now real estate has tremendous upside.

Another example would be the stock markets in general. When the “stock market bubble” burst, and the markets plummeted, panic ensued, forcing prices farther and farther down. In March 2009, it created what I’ve cleverly coined a “reverse bubble” (creative, no?)

Basically, all of the Markets were on sale. I personally purchased some Bank of America stock for the incredibly low price of just above $3 per share!

Look for gold to have the same kind of melt down – a massive sell off, causing panic, which will push prices to lows that any reasonable and “not panic driven” investor or trader will realize are ridiculously low prices.

And this will create fantastic “buying” opportunities for the investor or Trader who is ready.

So what do you need to do to put yourself in a position to take advantage of the upcoming Gold bubble burst?

First, you need to make sure you have investment capital at hand.

And second, you need to really learn day trading, really understand how to take advantage of sudden and violent movement in the Markets.

Gold is a panic hedge, and that panic button can drive the price in EITHER direction.

This is a very important component to your overall day trading success, and yet many people fail to really due the necessary due diligence in their selection.

So often, people will simply default to the large brokers, like eTrade, or Scottrade, or a similar broker, without really looking around.

But if you crave day trading success, then you’ve got to put more thought and research into the broker of your choice.

Smaller brokerages may offer much better terms, and more tools and resources.

If you are trading individual stocks or funds, then you might be best going with a Scottrade or something similar.

Get in, hit your target, get out…like you were never there

Successful Day Trading Strategy is dependent on many variables.

The day trader’s skill level, for example. Or her experience level. Or the quality of her training.

But there is one variable that is often overlooked when people assess their overall day trading strategy, and/or try to figure out why they can’t seem to win a trade to save their lives.

There are many Traders out there, new and experienced, that have lose trades before they ever hit “execute”

These Traders can’t seem to win trades consistently.

But they can’t figure out why (or, rather, why not).

They are doing everything right, following the strategy to the “T”, charting their course.

So why is that some Day Traders are so successful, and other’s just aren’t?

There may be many reasons why, but I know of one BIG one.

Day trading is an art, not a sciene. An artist’s attitude and outlook is reflected in his art. If an artist has a negative attitude, a defeatists attitude, then that is reflected in his art.

Successful Day Traders have a Winner’s Mentality.

They go into a trade with a positive outlook, fully expecting to win that trade.

Sure, they don’t win every trade.  But they are mentally prepared for it when they don’t.

But most importantly, they are mentally prepared BEFORE they ever enter a trade.

If you have a Defeatist attitude, you will lose far more trades than you win.

Why? Because your thoughts affect your actions.

Your Fear of loss will cause you to hesitate, and get into a trade too late, or miss it outright all together.

Your Fear of Loss will cause you to panic if a trade starts to go against  you, and hit the EJECT button, locking in your losses, rather than trusting your strategy.

Your defeatist attitude can even skew how you see the market’s behavior. If you have a defeatists attitude, you might see a positive indicator as negative, and enter a trade in the wrong direction.

You might misinterpret what is happening leading up to your trade, causing you to execute poorly.

On the flip side, if you have a Winners Attitude, you won’t hesitate. You’ll KNOW what to do in every instance.

Day Traders with a Winners’ Mentality also realize that day trading is an ART, NOT a Science. You don’t automatically get output “X” if you input “Y”.

By day trading with a Winners’ Mentality, you’ll BELIEVE in your system. And most importantly, you won’t compound losses with losses.

You know that day trading is inherently risky, and that there exists the potential for real and substantial losses.

But with a Winner’s Mentality, you can get past losses, and you can secure strong wins, much more easily than the Defeatists.

Day Trading and the Unemployment Rate are like siamese twins in a sibling rivlary – they are joined at the hip, whether they like it or not.

The unemployment rate took an unexpected jump as reported on Friday, Nov 6th.  Leading Economists expected the rate  to increase from 9.8% to 9.9% – but rising job losses and position cut-backs pushed the unemployment rate up by 0.4%.

A 0.4% increase in unemployment rate may not seem like a big deal, but believe me when I say this – it is HUGE. And it opened the Day Trading Floodgates.

And not only that, but it pushed the rate up over the “double digit barrier” – For many people, 10% unemployment compared to 9.9% psychologically seems like a much wider gap than 9.8% to 9.9%.

This will make the unemployment rate (and other employment data) even more politically sensitive than it already is.  Knowing that the magnifying glass is keenly focused on them, look for key government figures to try anything in their power to push for more job creation – but at the same time, the record deficit and budget cut-backs will make this a tall order.

What does this mean? High unemployment is here for the long haul (as we discussed in an earlier article). And payrolls, which have declined for 22 consecutive months now, since the economic pain started in December 2007, will likely continue to shrink.

If you are one of the unfortunate few to be among the 10.2% unemployed, this won’t come as very much solace to you.  But high and rising unemployment creates some fantastic day trading opportunities.

Consider Friday’s market movement (CLICK HERE TO SEE A PICTURE) – Following the unemployment announcement, the S&P futures market dropped by a ridiculous 12 points!

A Day Trader who knew when this was going to happen, and knew how to take advantage of it, would have been well positioned to pull in HUGE day trading profits in just a few minutes, or even less.

Unemployment rates are a very sensitive subject right now. Even the average citizen is watching them. Employment data moves the markets like no other indicator, creating massive volatility.

So as a Day Trader, investor, or even just a casual observer, its important to pay attention to this rate, and study how the markets react.

Because, after all, the stock market is nothing but a reflection of the mood of the masses in relation to the economy.

Day Trading and Investing is challenging in the best of times. Those trying to learn how to day trade or invest discover something very early on in their (often short lived) careers:

The stock market is cruel, unsympathetic, and indifferent. It’s also an expensive instructor.

Wall Street lures in new suckers every single day – chumps who fall for the siren song.

“Come on in, the water is FINE”

We’ve all been seduced by the Markets at least once in our lives. So why do we keep falling for their lies, over and over again?

Right now, Wall Street is trying to lure us towards the rocky cliffs. And many of us, being the lemmings that we are, will smile as we walk over the edge.

Of course, when I say “we”, I mean “you” – as in you people who can’t think critically for yourselves.

The latest market rally seems to be setting up “buy and hold” investors for another bloodbath. Day traders just sit back and smile, thinking about the volatility that is right around the corner.

The Dow is back over 10,000, the S&P is well over 1000 – it’s as if the markets are baiting investors into a trap.

“Hurry, jump on the boat, before you MISS the recovery!” is Wall Streets latest sales pitch.

The question becomes – is this really the recover? Or the mother of all Bear Market Rallies?

Do we REALLY think that the pain is over? Is it all butterflies, roses, and sunshine from here?

You can decide for yourself, but for me, I don’t believe it. I’m not buying the hype, I’m not falling for the siren song.

Consider this: Since the March lows, the S&P is up over 60%. Do you really believe that there is that much more top-side above and beyond this? Can this thing really run for another 40%, 50%, or more?

Or are we due for a major retracement/correction?

Considering the still flaccid state of the economy, my money is on a retracement.

Of course, this introduces fabulous day trading opportunities, for those who know how to take advantage of market turbulence, especially in a falling market.

Also, while the residential real estate markets seem to be starting to stabilize and bottom out (MAYBE), we are just at the tip of the iceberg on the Commercial Real Estate meltdown.

Commercial Real Estate has tanked in the last year. But there is more pain just around the corner – much more.

Look for further plummeting commercial real estate values over the next few years as the 5-year calls come due for properties financed in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Many of these properties were financed at 80% or higher, which means these loans are completely underwater now.

Do you remember how the markets reacted to the collapse of residential real estate?

Expect more of the same following a similar (or worse) commercial real estate collapse.

So if you want to believe the market’s siren song, be my guest. I’ll be sitting here like a vulture, waiting to pick up the scraps of what is left of your investment portfolio.

The best way to protect yourself from market uncertainty is to not hold long-term investments in securities.

In other words, by day trading, you protect your assets from long-term investment risk.

So act today, and learn how to trade – save yourself major pain tomorrow.
